Are They Using New Math or the Old?

The US Department of Labor has released the initial (new claims) numbers for unemployment for the week ending January 9, 2010. Seasonally adjusted new claims were 444,000 people. This was an increase of 11,000 people from the previous week.

However, the actual numbers show a much different story. The actual new claims were 801,086 people. This is an increase of 156,165 people from the previous week. The corresponding week from 2009, showed 956,791 new unemployment claims, so in a sense maybe things are getting better. Anyway you look at it though, over 800,000 people filing for unemployment for the first time is not good news.

My question is this. What math are they using to come up with unemployment claims? See the video below:
